چکیده

Embedding FBG strain sensors within a GFRP sandwich composite material allows early detection of internal defects. However, the sensors need to survive the manufacturing process to provide this capability. Vacuum infusion is commonly used to manufacture GFRP sandwich composite materials but, it needs to be modified to accommodate the embedding process. A stage by stage procedure is demonstrated here to embed FBG strain sensors between the skin–core interface of a GFRP sandwich beam specimen using the vacuum infusion method. Practical issues relating to sensor placement, fibre alignment, specimen lay-up and resin infusion are discussed. Also, the post cure effects of the resin on the FBG strain sensors are investigated. Static and dynamic load analyses are then performed to verify the repeatability and accuracy of the FBG strain sensors. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Field Deployable Fiber Bragg Grating Strain Patch for Long-Term Stable Health Monitoring Applications

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain patch specially adapted for long-term and high-strain applications has been developed and characterized. The design concept for the patch is based on a glass-fiber reinforced plastic (gfrp) carrier material. The developed concept for the FBG integration into the carrier material was derived from reliable integration procedure of FBG sensors into composite stru...

Monitoring of Disbonding in Bonded Composite Joints Using Cfbg Sensors Embedded within the Adhesive Bondline

Chirped fibre Bragg grating (CFBG) sensors have been embedded within the adhesive bondline of single-lap bonded composite joints, fabricated using a transparent glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) adherend bonded to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) adherend. During fatigue cycling, disbonds initiated adjacent to the cut ends of one, or both, of the adherends and the disbonds propagate...

Fiber Optic Bragg-Grating Sensors

In-fibre Bragg gratings are sensor elements which are photo-written into optical fibre using intense ultra-violet laser beams and have the potential for the measurement of strain/deformation and temperature with applications reported including monitoring of highways, bridges, aerospace components and in chemical and biological sensors. The development of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) measuring sy...

Analyses of composite structures behaviour with embedded Bragg grating sensors

Structural health monitoring of composite structures may be accomplished by measuring strains with embedded optical fibre sensors. In this paper, we present the performance of Bragg grating sensors, which are imbedded into a carbon composite laminate and them bonded to the structure in analyse. The paper will briefly discuss the results and compare them with a free fibre Bragg grating bonded in...
